Secrets, Loss, Memory, and Courage considers issues such as the marginalization of gay men and the emergence of a new cultural acceptance of gay people in many circles. The show brings together a range of works from the Addison's collection, including a number of recent gifts made in memory of Paul Monette, a writer and gay activist who graduated from Phillips Academy in 1963, on the occasion of the 50th reunion of his class. Through paintings, photographs, and video, the show explores a variety of themes, including secrecy, the male body as a focus of desire, AIDS, outsider communities, loving relationships between men, and the quest for tolerance and acceptance.
